Frequently asked questions

Got questions about technical training in San Diego? We believe in complete transparency and a performance-first approach to ensure you become a competent, self-reliant diver.

What prerequisites do I need before enrolling in a technical diving course?

At a minimum, divers must hold recognized Advanced Open Water Diver and Enriched Air (Nitrox) certifications. Depending on the specific tec program you choose, additional logged dives and foundational cold-water experience may also be recommended.

How long does a course take to complete?

Technical training is strictly performance-based rather than time-based. While courses have minimum scheduled days for academics, confined water, and open water dives, certification is awarded only when you have demonstrated true mastery of the required skills.

Do I have to own all my own gear before starting?

While owning your personal technical kit (such as backplate/wing, regulators, and exposure suit) is ideal for familiarity and comfort, gear recommendations and rental options can be discussed during your pre-course consultation to ensure you invest in the right setup.

Will technical diving training make me a better recreational diver?

Yes, absolutely. The foundational skills emphasized in tec—such as pinpoint buoyancy control, propulsion techniques, precise trim, situational awareness, and problem-solving—dramatically enhance your safety, comfort, and confidence on any dive.

What is your rescheduling and cancellation policy?

We have a straightforward and accommodating policy. Life happens, and any diver must feel comfortable calling a dive or session at any time, for any reason, with zero pressure. The ocean will always be there tomorrow.

What should I expect between pool sessions and open water dives?

Every program begins with theory and comprehensive gear configuration, followed by confined water or pool sessions to hone muscle memory and emergency protocols before we head into the open ocean along the California coast.

What should I do if I feel unsure about my readiness for tec?

Reach out directly for a consultation or checkout dive. We can assess your current trim, buoyancy, and comfort in the water, helping you identify skill drills or refresher sessions before jumping into full technical coursework.

Where do practical training dives take place?

Training dives are conducted at premier ocean dive sites across San Diego, California, offering realistic conditions that prepare you for genuine technical and decompression diving scenarios.
